Dolphin Watching

On the sand dune
high above the ocean like
a gull, swooping and riding the
current sweeping over everything
I sit and watch the dolphins as
they glide through salt water
over and under, breaking
surface tension in waves
with their dorsal fins piercing
the space between sea and sky, the
blowback scattering mist like crystal
glimmering, rainbow, golden in the sun
Playful members of the pod ride the
crest of a mounting wave, then dive
three feet below where their figures
flicker like the shadow of a candle
and the taste of salt is on my
tongue, vision swimming,
so follows the realization
that my own water is saline too.
